Avalanche’s traditional character art is taking shape through charcoal and a gritty black-and-white visual direction. The aim is to give its characters a visible presence: a face readers can recognise alongside the names, relationships and events of the stories.

This is a developing part of the project. A traditional portrait of Ki-Chi is currently in progress. The existing AI-generated portraits and scenery serve as provisional visual drafts, with the intention of replacing them with finished artwork as it is created.

Why charcoal fits Avalanche

The choice starts with the monochrome feeling of the universe. Charcoal suits the realistic, gritty appearance its creator wants to develop, connecting the traditional drawings to the black-and-white atmosphere already used across the website.

Keeping colour out of the picture places attention on the portrait’s shapes, light and dark areas. Within Avalanche’s visual direction, that offers a way to make the artwork feel connected without requiring every character or scene to look identical.

The aim is a distinctive Avalanche art style developed through making the work. It is an artistic direction in progress, rather than a claim that the entire traditional collection is already finished.

Showing what a character looks like

The portraits have a direct purpose: to show the characters’ appearance. Written descriptions remain part of storytelling, but a drawing lets someone see a character without needing a long explanation of their features.

A portrait also gives people a visual point of reference when they explore the lore. Someone arriving through an artwork post can begin with a face, then choose to discover the person’s place in the larger world.

That does not make the image a replacement for the story. The drawing introduces an appearance; the character’s decisions, relationships and experiences give it further meaning.

From provisional AI images to traditional artwork

The images currently used to establish many of Avalanche’s characters and environments were generated with AI. They are visual drafts of the intended direction, not completed charcoal drawings.

The plan is to develop the portraits and scenery through traditional artwork and upload the finished pieces as they become available. That transition will happen over time. A reference image, a work-in-progress drawing and a finished piece should therefore be clearly identified when they are shown.

This distinction matters for anyone following the project. Viewers should be able to understand what they are looking at, rather than assume that every image already on the website was drawn by hand.

Ki-Chi: a portrait in progress

A portrait of Ki-Chi is currently around halfway through its development. It provides an early example of the move towards the traditional artwork intended for Avalanche.

The finished image is still to come. Showing the work in progress offers a way to follow that development without presenting an unfinished piece as the final result.

As the collection grows, finished portraits can appear alongside short character introductions. The aim is to offer an inviting first look, with the deeper lore available for people who want to keep exploring.

Sharing the artwork through cinematic presentation

The planned approach favours carefully prepared posts over a constant stream of updates. A drawing can become both a finished-image post and a short process video, with filming and editing that reflect Avalanche’s cinematic atmosphere.

There is no fixed promise that every drawing will be completed within a particular number of days. Traditional portraits take time, and the quality of the work is part of the reason for making them.

Explore Avalanche's alternative history: a fictional Nordic Commonwealth inspired by a modern Kalmar Union, with familiar places, cultures and characters.

Avalanche’s alternative history begins with a simple creative idea: what might a modern reimagining of the Kalmar Union look like? The result is the fictional Nordic Commonwealth, a setting built from recognisable countries, cultures and locations, shaped by a different sequence of political decisions.

The intention is a world that feels plausible, with room for a slightly stylised thriller atmosphere. Its history provides the ground beneath the characters, rather than requiring readers to memorise an entirely unfamiliar civilisation.

A modern union as a starting point

The original inspiration was a “Kalmar Union 2.0”. In Avalanche, that is a creative starting point for imagining renewed Nordic unification, not a claim that its Commonwealth simply recreates a historical institution.

The interesting question is how such a union might become convincing to the people living in it. A shared government needs more than a name and a flag. It needs reasons for countries to cooperate, disagreements about what they should share, and people whose lives are affected by the outcome.

Change through crises and decisions

Avalanche’s fictional timeline builds towards unification gradually. Financial instability, disruption and arguments over security create pressure for closer cooperation. Shared responses can work, giving people practical reasons to support the next step.

In this imagined sequence, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Iceland vote to unify in 2019, while Norway initially remains outside. Norway’s decision to join comes later, in 2029. Those dates describe Avalanche’s alternative timeline, not real Nordic political history.

The different pace matters. The Commonwealth is not presented as a decision everyone reaches at once. The world develops through negotiations, competing interests and changing circumstances, leaving space for both conviction and resistance.

Keeping countries and cultures recognisable

The aim is to retain real countries, locations and cultures while imagining different events and institutional relationships. A recognisable place gives the reader something to hold onto as the political landscape changes around it.

Unification does not mean that every national identity disappears. In the setting, member countries retain their own governments for domestic affairs, alongside the Commonwealth’s shared leadership. That arrangement creates room for different loyalties and perspectives within the same union.

The slight stylisation belongs to the presentation and thriller atmosphere. The underlying ambition is still plausibility: developments should connect to one another rather than exist only because a dramatic scene needs them.

Institutions that shape personal stories

Two organisations help connect the larger history to individual experience. The Civil Protection Response Agency, or CPRA, brings together public response functions. Nordic Intelligence operates through a different, private structure, raising questions about oversight as its influence grows.

For Agatha, Kaylia and Moses, those institutions are more than background names. Their different positions as a former operative, an investigative journalist and a public servant provide different ways to encounter the same world.

The purpose of the worldbuilding is to support those characters. Readers can be interested in the political history, become attached to an individual protagonist, or move between the two. There is no single required way to enjoy Avalanche.

Explore the history without learning everything first

The Avalanche world timeline offers a deeper look at the fictional events behind the Commonwealth. It contains more story detail than this introduction, so explore it at your own pace if you prefer to discover the characters’ experiences gradually.

Avalanche is a Nordic political thriller universe about the promise of security and the people who discover what lies behind it. Its interconnected stories follow Agatha, Kaylia and Moses through a fictional Nordic Commonwealth, where loyalty to an institution does not always mean loyalty to the people it is meant to protect.

Political intrigue, investigation and tactical action form the backdrop to character-driven stories. You can begin with a character, explore the history or try a free browser investigation. You do not need to learn the entire timeline before stepping inside.

Why set a political thriller in the Nordic countries?

Avalanche begins with a familiar impression of the Nordic region: security, stability and institutions people can trust. That impression makes it an interesting setting for a story about what happens behind the curtains. The tension comes from recognising something reassuring, then discovering how much remains out of sight.

The setting is also close to home for its creator. Familiar places become the starting point for an alternative history, rather than a claim that its fictional institutions or conspiracies exist in real life.

The Commonwealth’s promise of protection

In Avalanche’s alternative timeline, successive crises draw Nordic countries towards closer cooperation. Shared responses offer genuine benefits. The Nordic Commonwealth grows from a promise that its members can protect their people more effectively together.

That promise matters. The world is not built around the idea that every institution is false or everyone working inside it is corrupt. Public service, cooperation and personal conviction give people reasons to believe in the system.

But Nordic Intelligence’s private structure leaves gaps in public oversight. Surveillance, political influence and commercial interests become increasingly difficult to separate. The question is no longer only whether the system can protect people. It is who can question the people directing it.

When security becomes difficult to challenge, who decides what counts as a threat? And what happens to someone who refuses to accept that decision?

Three protagonists, three perspectives on the same world

Agatha: loyalty and conscience

Agatha once served as one of the institution’s trusted operatives. Capable, disciplined and experienced, she believed in the work she was doing. Leaving that career behind does not put its influence beyond her reach.

Her story explores the distance between serving an organisation and standing by the principles that made her join it. For someone who knows the institution from within, walking away is only the beginning of a difficult choice.

Kaylia: beyond the official account

Kaylia approaches the Commonwealth as an investigative journalist. Her attention is drawn to details that do not fit: missing explanations, unanswered questions and evidence that resists an easy conclusion.

Her perspective follows the process of uncovering a story. Finding information is one challenge. Deciding what to do with it, and facing the consequences of continuing to look, is another.

Moses: public service from the inside

Moses is a former soldier who builds a new life within the Civil Protection Response Agency, or CPRA. His path offers the perspective of someone working inside public service.

Through him, the world can be encountered through individual cases, colleagues and responsibilities. Working within an institution does not mean knowing everything happening above or around you.

A connected world, experienced through its characters

Agatha, Kaylia and Moses are interconnected protagonists with different positions in the same world. Their stories approach its conflicts through loyalty, investigation and service. What one person understands may be hidden from another.

The aim is to create excitement and an interest in the people behind the larger conflict. Political history gives the world its structure, while relationships, convictions and personal decisions give readers a reason to stay.
